Description
Fast freight LS-6 pauses at Dayton for water on its morning run from Cincinnati to Bellefontaine. The 3043 is trailing a manifest-length train of 56 cars, including three stock on the head end. When this picture was made, Dayton yard had been dieselized, and the coal dock on the left was out of service. The four yard engines assigned covered six yard jobs (two on each trick) and the switch runs to Franklin and Miamisburg. The yard here consists of two small pockets; one lies west of the yard office (the building in the right background above) and has 7 through tracks and 2 stubs, and the other is located east of the yard office and has only 3 through tracks. These modest facilities would hardly seem to warrant six yard jobs, but there is a considerable amount of industrial work around Dayton, some of it along the freight house lead which extends toward the downtown area from the yard, and some on the south side of town over three miles from the yard. The 1.7 miles of track through the heart of the city between Second Street (a short distance south of the yard) and Miami City Junction are the property of the Dayton Union, a terminal company jointly owned by the NYC, B&O, and Pennsylvania. These tracks are elevated and are arranged solely to accommodate the depot; industrially, they are in a sort of no-man's land. In addition to industrial work, the yard jobs at Dayton also have a sizeable freight house and interchange from three railroads (Erie, B&O, and PRR) to handle, and one of them, on third trick, spends its time transferring cars to and from Moraine, site of the huge Frigidaire plant six miles south.
