Description

This photograph was taken at Springfield roundhouse in early 1953, when steam was still the dominant form of motive power on the left is the 6390, an H-6 2-8-2 which was being turned on the Bellefontaine Springfield local. The 4-8-2 on the right, L-3b no. 3038, was assigned to the regular Valley Run and was idling while the crew took their rest. The diesel switcher was "on loan from Bellefontaine and was being used on the "drag" job. At the time, the only diesel regularly assigned at Springfield was the 9603, an 800 IP switcher used on the Delaware switch run. A pair of geeps was turned every night to on the "Flash", the Columbus-Springfield round-trip freight officially known as SD-5 westbound and SD-2 eastbound. All other assignments were handled by steam--specifically, six out of nine yard jobs, the two sections of the Valley Run, the switch run to Fairborn, the switch run to Columbus, and the through freight and switch run on the Indiana Division's so-called Springfield District to Indianapolis. The foregoing enumeration, incidentally, covers all the trains which were then made up or broken up at Springfield (present operations are somewhat different). The turnaround runs out of Columbus and Bellefontaine present more or less the same switching problem, and of course there are setouts and pickups by through freights to be handled. To accommodate this traffic, there are available in Springfield yard eighteen classification tracks. Space is limited - only eight of these tracks hold over 25 cars - and, what with the lack of accessibility mentioned in connection with the previous picture, the yard must be listed as obsolete, along with so many others all over the central system.
