Description
Headquarters of the Michigan District are at Anderson, about 135 miles from Jeffersonville on the south end and 120 miles from Elkhart on the north end. The yard at South Anderson is under the jurisdiction of the Indiana Division, although it is adjacent to the Anderson belt line of the Ohio Division. Through-running freights of the Ohio Division pick up and set out here, and one of their locals from Ansonia formerly laid up overnight (the latter has been withdrawn as of this writing). Michigan District trains originate here for the north and the south; no. 74 to Elkhart and a turnaround local to Wabash usually suffice for northbound business, and no's. 71 and 70 to Jeffersonville comprise the normal southbound complement. In this 1953 scene at South Anderson engine terminal, the hulk at left is the 2870, dead and whitelined; coupled together in the center are the 3023 off no. 76 from Jeffersonville and the 7621 off a yard job; and at the water plug is the 7991, next out in yard service. The boy was obeying youthful impulses in blissful ignorance of the safety rules.
