Description
High Street, the main business thoroughfare of Springfield, crosses over the Sandusky Division tracks just east of the wye at Linden Avenue. This picture was made from the High Street bridge as the regular section of the Valley Run pulled up the westbound main towards Linden Avenue, its crew fully rested for their return trip to the home terminal at Cincinnati. The Valley's grimy L-2, no. 2989, shuffles along easily with only twelve cars for Dayton, but she will have a full pack on her last lap, with pickups to be made at Fairborn, Dayton, Moraine, and Middletown. This train and the aforementioned Advance Valley work in staggered fashion up and down the Miami Valley, covering alternate points in such a manner that daily through service is extended to nearly all-important industries. The well-sanded condition of the track on the left is evidence of the westbound grade, which begins at the yard and levels out almost directly under the bridge. As might be imagined, heavy westbound freights find the going tough along here. A good deal of the trackage through Springfield, a hilly city, is inclined more or less, with the most troublesome spots located east and west of the yard and east towards the depot from West End. These obstacles, plus the abundance of street crossings almost everywhere, enhance the value of the Erie cutoff between Glen Echo and Cold Springs.
