Title
Train second SY-2, tri-color signal masts in view
Subject
Steam Freight train
Description
From the west window of the tower at Greensburg, the view includes, from right to left, the westward siding, the main track, the eastward siding, and the Michigan District main track as it curves southward towards North Vernon and Louisville. The Michigan District from the south connects with the main line in what is known as the 'new wye', the east leg of which is visible here, and the west leg of which runs behind the oil tanks and joins the eastward siding in the right background. The train, incidentally, is 2/SY-2, whose engine, the 3038, is concealing a painfully brief consist of 30 cars in a fog of coal smoke, feedwater heater and safety valve exhaust, boiler blowdown sludge, and other assorted vapors. On this occasion, it highballed through town, with the L-3 furnishing an accompaniment composed of almost all the sounds in the symphony of steam railroading.
