Description
With relation to the scene shown on the preceding page, this view is in almost the opposite direction. In the background, of course, is the Ohio River, flowing from left to right. The main tracks in the the foreground are, from front to back, those of the NYC and the B&O St. Louis Division. Barely out of sight in the left foreground, at a location known as Storrs, are crossovers connecting these mains, with the aforementioned 'Oklahoma' track. The yard here is part of the B&O St. Louis Division. Between this yard and the river, there runs a single main track of the B&O which carries passenger trains. of the B&O St. Louis Division and NYC Indiana Division to and from Cincinnati Union Terminal. (It will have become apparent by now that the NYC's Cincinnati Terminal operation is very much at the mercy of the road's direct competitor, the B&0.) Storrs Junction - not to be confused with just plain Storrs - is the location of the crossovers where Indiana Division passenger trains are switched on and off the B&O's Union Terminal connection, and also where this connection merges with the B&O freight mains in the foreground. The switchtender's shanty at Storrs Junction is faintly visible below and to the left of the white smoke plume in the background. The plume is from an NYC 0-8-0 bound from Riverside Yard to Mill Creek Yard with a transfer cut.
