Description
Taken shortly after the preceding picture and following the arrival of no. 303 from Detroit, Toledo, and Bellefontaine, this picture shows the two J-1s, the 5283 on no. 303 and the 5384 on X-447, lined up abreast on depot tracks one and two, respectively. Though these veteran speedsters are basically identical, the 5283 features a squarish feedwater heater uncommon on J-1s, while the 5384 is equipped with the conventional round "tube bundle". At the time, no. 303 was scheduled to pass X-447 here, but both trains have since been discontinued. Springfield, with a population of about 80,000, is still served by an overnight train between Cincinnati and Detroit, two day trains and one night train between Cincinnati and Cleveland, a night mail and express train on the same run, and the "Ohio State Limiteds" between Cincinnati and New York. The prospect is for more shrinkage and soon, however, one of the two day trains between Cincinnati and Cleveland is to be taken off in April (1958), and permission is being sought to remove the Cincinnati-Detroit trains.
