Description
The photography returns most emphatically to Ohio Division subject matter in this scene at Springfield, where division headquarters are located. Limestone Street is in the foreground; beyond are the depot platforms and the depot itself, which houses the division offices on its second floor. The depot tracks are numbered one, two, and three from left to right. Loading mail and express on track two is X-447, a Cleveland-Cincinnati local no longer in the timecard but eking out a bare existence here with five cars headed by J-1 no. 5384. To the right of depot track three are the westbound and eastbound mains, respectively, used principally by freight trains bypassing the depot. The tracks immediately beyond the fence at far right make up what was formerly a coach yard, but what for lack of use in that respect has been converted into a holding yard for cars, moving to and from local industries. Speaking of the latter, the rambling buildings in the right background are part of the Oliver farm implement works.
