Description

The first series of photographs taken out on the open road are on the Indiana Division, and are arranged in sequence from Cincinnati to Kankakee, save for a brief side-trip to South Anderson. To introduce this series, four views of the Cincinnati Terminal have been inserted. These, although they are not illustrative of steam operations, show parts of the terminal layout through which Indiana Division traffic passes before it reaches the main line. The single track in the foreground here is known as the 'Oklahoma'. It is a very vital link (and something of a bottleneck) between the B&O's Ohio Division, tracks of which curve through the background behind the floodwall and under Eighth Street Viaduct, and, at the other end, the B&O's St. Louis Division and the NYC tracks between Hill Creek Yard downtown and Riverside Yard, about two miles downriver to the west. NYC trains which use this connection include the four Indiana Division freights running between Indianapolis and Sharon Yard in Cincinnati (these trains will be pictured on subsequent pages), and all terminal transfers between Riverside and Sharon yards. The only connection between the Indiana and Ohio Division portions of the NYC's Cincinnati Terminal territory is via six miles of trackage rights over the B&O's Ohio Division between Cincinnati Junction (above, just beyond the floodwall on the right) and Ivorydale Junction, Terminal operations at the ... Ohio Division end - Ivorydale, Sharon Yard, etc. - are illustrated in another album. (Note: to add to the confusion at this point, the tracks running parallel to the floodwall above are the mains of the B&Os Toledo Division, known as the 'CH&D'.)
