Description

This picture and the next one have little, if anything, to do with the Ohio Division. They illustrate two variations of the operations of the Ohio Central Division in and around Columbus, and are inserted here in this album because there is no logical place for them elsewhere. The scene below is at the west end of the Ohio Central yard at West Columbus. Some of the buildings in downtown Columbus are visible in the left background. In the foreground, EMD road units 1718-2405-1717 are about ready to leave with an extra for Toledo. Further to the right, a caboose attached to a string of empty N&W hoppers indicates a Bannon transfer (Bannon, five miles southeast of the yard, is the junction and interchange point with the N&W. On the far right at the engine terminal are GP-7s no's. 5607, 5665, and 5605, used on the Bannon jobs and in local freight service. Beyond them, near the coal dock, are some dead H-6 engines (steam was defunct on the Ohio Central when this was taken). The Ohio Division's Columbus-Springfield runs - a local in the morning and a through freight at night - set out and pick up in this yard, which has 31 tracks. The Ohio and Ohio Central Divisions cross at Grandview tower, directly behind the camera.
