Description
An overflow of Collinwood traffic, which Bellefontaine made up into a 73-car train and symboled A/BC-4 (a designation reserved for such once- or bi-weekly occasions when business is too heavy for the regular manifests) is hustled east through Marion by the 3029. Smoke in the background is from an H-6 engine assigned to the Galion-Marion switch run. A clear stack on the part of the 3029 does not mean lack of effort - in fact, the 0.9% eastbound pull through Marion, plus a lesser rise ten miles east at Caledonia, once created a demand for helper service. The helpers, operated out of Galion, backed to LaRue and coupled on there (this service was mostly confined to solid oil trains during World War II). Galion helpers also assisted west bounds up the 0.9% and around the reverse curves between Ridgeway and Bellefontaine, Diesels, however, have put an end to these activities.
