Title

B Tower and watchman's elevated shanty in view

Subject

Diesel Freight Train

Description

For its size (1960 population 40,274), Elkhart, Indiana, is probably as unadulterated a railroad town as there is in the highly-developed industrial area comprised of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. It is, moreover, a one railroad town, with the Central dominating an economy in which drugs , house trailers, band instruments, and a variety of other manufactured items play a part. From the station platform, we look towards Main Street crossing as the Goshen local pulls into town. "B" tower, a widely used OS point in NYC reporting over the years, is visible beyond the watchman's elevated shanty. The line from Jackson, Michigan, enters on the left of the tower; passenger mains from Toledo curve in at center, and freight leads parallel on the right.
