Description

The camera here was shifted somewhat to the right to better record the track layout at the base of the hump. The south yard is clearly revealed, with NY-4 under way for DeWitt on track 2 This yard consists of 11 tracks numbered 1 through 8, runner, 9, and 0, with room for about 125 cars maximum on track 1. Ladder switches at the west end are controlled by the operator at tower 47 and at the east end by the hump switchtender, who also controls north yard switches at this end and switches at the base of the hump and at the west end of the east yard. The shanty on the ladder houses equipment used by the hump clerk to record car initials and numbers on arriving trains. The lead from the north yard, right background, runs into the east runner, on the right. The next pair of converging tracks from the north and south hump leads.
