Description
Opposite DeWitt yard on the westside of Syracuse, there was once a yard in an area known as Belle Isle. This yard was used for traffic being transferred between mainline and Pennsylvania Division trains on the one hand and trains serving Oswego, Watertown, and points north on the other, DeWitt has now assumed this function, and the remaining trackage at Belle Isle is used primarily to serve the Solvay Process Company. This photograph was taken when Belle Isle was in its heyday; the main line, consisting of tracks 2, 1, 3, a middle siding, and 4, is on the left, and next come tracks 6, 10 ,5, and a couple of sidings, with train CD-2 from Newberry Junction pulling up track 6 after having set out in Belle Isle yard. The state fairgrounds are behind the fence on the right.
