Description
The nearest thing in NYC steam to the progressive principle of a diesel fueling facility was the 'square house' at DeWitt. Located west of the yard along the Lake Line, this rectangular building housed four through tracks with pits and provided quick servicing for all power not due for inspection or requiring major repairs. Most locomotives on short turnarounds were thus kept out of the roundhouse (partly visible in the right background). The lineup of power at the square house here includes, left to right, Mohawks 3128, 2735, and 3015 - Lima 1942, Alco 1925, and Alco 1937, respectively. Today the renovated square house serves as the shop for the Speno Company, operator of ballast cleaners, rail grinders, and other track maintenance machinery.
