Description

This complex of trackage at the west end of DeWitt yard, known as the 'puzzles', has a long-standing and well-deserved reputation for congestion. Bridge Street in East Syracuse very conveniently crosses the tracks here, affording this view east towards the humps and Rotnour Road (the bridge is barely visible in the distance). The passenger mains are in the foreground, freight running tracks next, then the 27 track westbound advance yard, and finally, the 17-track eastbound receiving yard. In this typically busy scene, L-4 no. 3134 on the left heads for the eastbound receiving yard with a manifest off the Big Four, while one diesel and three steam switchers joust with one another for routes through the bottleneck.
