Title

Eastbound freight on track 4

Subject

Steam Freight Train

Description

Canastota is a typical small manufacturing town of upper New York State, located twenty-one miles east of Syracuse on the main line of the New York Central. The photographer spent six hours in this vicinity one sunny day of May, 1949, and took the pictures appearing on this and the next five pages. Above is Mohawk no.3044 of the L-3 class passing thru town with 95 loads behind her. The train, classified by gravity at DeWitt Yards, East Syracuse, is thirteen miles out of Minoa, site of the advance yard where solid eastbound trainloads such as this one are put together. The train in the distance on the near track is no.40, Syracuse-New York passenger.
