Train no. 350
Subject
Steam Passenger Train
Description
Exchange Street, along the Falls Branch in downtown Buffalo, was formerly the site of the NYC's main passenger terminal in the city. The old depot there had become crowded and delapidated, as well as an operating headache, hence the present Central Terminal was erected out in East Buffalo, where space was then more easily acquired. Completion of the new station did not, however, alter the fact that Exchange Street was far more convenient than East Buffalo for most passengers. Recognizing this, the Central built a trim, compact station there to accommodate people who might wish to board or leave Michigan Central, TH&B, or Niagara Falls trains near the center of town. Here is the present Exchange Street station, with no. 358 arriving at 8:52 AM (it is 2.54 miles from here to Central Terminal, and no. 358 is due there at 9:00 AM). No. 358 is an overnight run from Chicago to Buffalo via the Michigan Central; on this occasion, it had twelve cars and was drawn by Hudson 5367. Note the evidence of two-way signalling in the background; more will be said about that later.
