Description

TH&B trains were invariably steam-powered, and were therefore favored subjects for picture-making. From Chicago Street bridge, we see here no. 383, doubleheaded with CPR Pacifics 2393 and 2469. One of these spit-and-polish engines could doubtless have handled the twelve-car train by itself, so that the extra power was probably in satisfaction of requirements elsewhere. To the right of the mains in the immediate background sits little tower 52, governing movements to and from the Ohio Street branch, which is the track entering the picture at right and joining the mains in front of the tower. This branch is a stub-end industrial track less than a mile long. Cars for Ohio Street industries are held and classified in Chicago Street yard, which consists of ten stub tracks, partly visible here in the right foreground. The crew switching on the lead is assigned to Job 11, the Ohio Street engine. As mentioned before, Falls Branch tracks 3 and 4 terminate at tower 52; their extentions, in the form of ordinary yard tracks, are to the left of no. 383. The yard beyond them and the diesel switcher in it belong to the Erie,
