Title

Erie RR clas N-3 2-8-2 running down the center of Railroad St.

Subject

Steam Freight Train

Description

One of Corning's outstanding features is the Erie mainline running down the center of Railroad Street. Restricted trainspeeds and blocked traffic make this layout pretty much of an all-around nuisance. Eastbound freights working the yard must of necessity extend somewhat out onto this street, since the east yard throat is just at the end of pavement. With his engine opposite the station right foreground), this hogger is peering back at his head brakeman for a signal as he sets out thirty cars or so in the yard. The engine is no.3179, a heavy N-3 class Mikado built by Baldwin in 1923, and this particular freight train is a pickup job from Hornell to Elmira and return.
