Description
The track layout at Gardenville is crossed at several key places by highway overpasses, a situation which makes the yard an easy one to photograph. This is the view from Union Road bridge, looking east. The location here is a little over a mile west of the area where the several preceding photos were taken (the white tank in the background identifies the diesel facilities, and, on very close scrutiny, Lossen Road bridge can be seen to its right). The thoroughfares are in the right foreground, and the buildings adjoining them are the car-repair shops. The rip lead emerges to join the thoroughfares just below the bridge. On the left are two leads from the westbound class yard, and on the nearest one, Alco switcher 813 is doubling the head end of A/LS-1. A considerable amount of classification is done by flat-switching at this end of the yard, even though it means handling some cars twice. The 24-track eastbound class yard is out of sight to the right (the track which diverges from the eastbound thoroughfare in the middle distance leads to this yard).
