Title

Assisting RF-16s #3815, 3708 on train no. KI-2

Subject

Steam Locomotive

Description

This final view of the KI-2 of June 23, 1956, shows the durable L-2 at its head about to clatter across the main line of the Pennsylvania at Woods tower (whose roof appears just above the engine cab) Woods is a mere hundred-odd yards south of BX. The two tracks curving in to join the Belt in the foreground are the St. Louis line connections. BX controls the switches at the NYC end of these tracks, and a Belt operator controls those at his end. The interlocking under the latter's command is one of the busiest and most complex on the entire semi-circular bypass route. In addition to the NYC connection, it also governs the Belt end of two wyes which join the Belt and the PRR here. Four switches handle the diverging routes, but seven crossovers are required to head. trains onto the proper tracks for movement south on the Belt, or north in various directions - to the B&O, P&E, or Belt at KD, to the east or west PRR wyes at Woods, or to the east or west NYC. Wyes at BX (the east wye at BX, previously unmentioned, connects Westside Yard with the Belt). This interlocking, which is within hailing distance of Woods, is known as the "cutoff". It is the Westernmost of eight locations on the Belt where Belt operators or switchtenders are stationed.
