Title
Train no. CC-1
Subject
Steam Freight Train
Description
A variety of important functions are performed by the operator who sits in the innocuous little shack serving as the office at KD (a corner of this building is visible at the extreme left, above), Among these functions are the control of B&O movements to and from the P&E-B&O paired track, the handling of switching maneuvers at the east end of Moorefield yard, and the routing of P&E and Indiana Division freights to and from the Belt. The latter operation is illustrated in this picture, in which the 2933 blasts around the corner off the Belt with the 51 cars of Kankakee-bound CC-1. (The high polish sported by the 2933 is most uncommon in these times of neglect for the remnants of steam.) North of KD, the Belt is single tracked and is travelled only by its own switchers with cuts of cars for industries between KD and the end of line at 25th Street. The track on the right here is the connection from the Belt to the B&O's Moorefield yard. The latter is the home terminal of the B&O in Indianapolis, whereas the NYC's Moorefield yard, formerly the home terminal of the P&E, is now used mostly for pickups and setouts and for storage.
