Description
The preceding picture encompassed the crisscross patterns of the portion of IJ interlocking east of the tower, and an earlier picture was directed at the portion along the St. Louis line west of it. This one shows the remainder, which lies on the Kankakee line, also to the west (the St. Louis line is out of the picture to the left). The departing train is the westbound Riley. Actually, it is misleading to refer to this stretch as the Kankakee line, even though Indiana Division trains account for a large part of its traffic density. As indicated before, the Peoria and Eastern owns the 2.5-mile right-of-way between IJ and Brant. There is, however, another element of ownership involved in the 0.9-mile section between IJ and KD, the next interlocking to the west. The B&O, which, like the NYC and PRR, uses It tracks through the downtown area, has trackage rights over the NYC between West Street and IJ, then has a paired-track arrangement with the P&E between IJ and KD, The Riley above is on the P&E main; the eastbound main is the property of the B&O. The third track, owned by the P&E, is a thoroughfare for freights and yard cuts which extends to Moorefield yard, just beyond KD, and connects with a passing track there that terminates at Brant.
