Title
Train no. 405
Subject
Steam Passenger Train
Description
In the waning light of a January afternoon in 1954, no. 405 is hustled into Indianapolis by PT-tendered J-3 no. 5413. The train is just coming onto Indianapolis Union tracks at College Avenue, about four city blocks west of Shelby Street (the westbound main of the NYC ends at the diamond over which the 5413’s pony wheels are rolling). From here, it is seven more city blocks to Meridian Street, the main north-south artery in Indianapolis, and the east end of Union Station. The other track involved in the diamond dividing the NYC and IU here is a spur of the B&O, which runs to the latter's freighthouse territory at East Street, two blocks west. The next track in the path of no. 405 is the B&O main, after which it will encounter the two main tracks of the Pennsylvania. These all merge here and, like the NYC, the PRR and B&O use IU tracks through the downtown area.
