Steam Freight Train
Description
The wye last mentioned in the preceding footnote is, for obvious reasons, dubbed the icehouse wye. In addition to yard cuts bound to and from Middle or East Hill and Brightwood, its principal users are the Springfield branch trains, namely the locals and through freights 91 and 92. Eastbound, these trains are made up at East Hill and reach the branch by means of a somewhat unusual route, the directions of which read as follows: six lead from East Hill to the icehouse crossovers, the icehouse wye from there to the Belt, and the Belt to Eastside, Westbound, branch trains take the reverse of this route except that, instead of pulling straight into East Hill yard, they run up the old main and back into one of the hump leads, since the largest proportion of their . cars are for points west on the Indiana and Illinois Divisions. No. 91 is shown here on the Belt at Southeastern Avenue, with L-2s 2836 and 2855 trailing 61 cars (cab-to-caboose radio was then used on the branch, and the antenna for this system appears on the 2836, along the top of the boiler). This four-tracked section of the Belt is just east of the icehouse wye. At this point, the freight tracks of the Pennsylvania connect with the Belt, also in a wye. The west leg of this wye joins the Belt just east of the icehouse wye, and, like the icehouse, is interlocked from Belt crossing.
