Description
Hill Yard is actually a group of yards with different names and functions scattered over a distance of about three miles. The main line skirts this far-flung and rather purposeless conglomeration from Beech Grove on the east to Belt crossing on the west. This picture was taken from the bridge which carries Sherman Drive over the yard at a point which, though it is nearer the west end than the middle, is called "Middle Hill" (doubtless because the hump is located nearby). The camera here is facing east along the main tracks in the direction of Beech Grove. The yard tracks in this vicinity are out of sight at the right, somewhat separated from the mains. In the upper-right-hand corner, East Hill yard is visible; this is the yard from which the 2/SY-2 trains just pictured were leaving. It has sixteen tracks, supplemented by a six-track receiving yard located just east of it in the direction of Beech Grove, and at the Hill, it is the eastbound yard. Eastbound trains leave here bound either for Sharon or Riverside yards in Cincinnati or for Springfield, Ohio. The center of attraction above is no. 405, coming down the westward main behind J-1 no. 5269, an old standby on the Cincinnati-Kankakee run. The train is making almost the full 75 MPH allowed, but the engineer has begun his application for the slow over the Belt at Belt crossing.
