Description
This picture begins the series illustrating the route through Indianapolis followed by the main line of the Indiana Division from Cincinnati to Kankakee. Again, as in the case of the Cleveland-St. Louis series, the pictures are arranged as nearly as possible in an east-west sequence on the line from Cincinnati, Beech Grove tower is the beginning of Indianapolis terminal territory. In contrast to the other towers which guard the flanks of the terminal, Beech Grove is in a rural setting some distance removed from the city's encroachments. (Mount Jackson and Brant, the latter to be discussed subsequently, are in mature residential areas, and Eastwood is in a new and fast-growing region of development housing.) Beech Grove, which is fairly well isolated from principal streets and highways, is bordered on one side by a cornfield. On the other side, there is a yard of sorts - namely, six stub tracks which formerly served a huge coal-storage dump, but which are now used as a old folks home for steam locomotive tenders. Needless to say, there is little switching activity here to disturb the Beech Grove operator (the coal which was stored in the area was stockpiled for steam-locomotive use during World War II). In the scene above, CC-3, the Cincinnati-Kankakee hotshot, is easing across from the westward to the eastward main, preparatory to entering the yard lead. The 3010, an L-3a 4-8-2, was trailing 56 loads and 13 empties on this occasion.
