Description
To encompass this action, the camera was located astride the aforementioned north lead, and was faced across the south lead (in the foreground) and the seven Eastwood tracks towards the main line. Diesels 1859-6600 are departing from Brightwood on the westbound main, bound for Terre Haute with 100 empty hoppers. On its arrival from Bellefontaine several hours before, this hopper train was yarded in the New yard to avoid congestion in the westbound yard; then, since there is no direct access to the main line from the west end of the New yard, it was necessary to back the train out to the main via the north lead and Eastwood tower. Over on the eastbound running track, steam engine no. 9405, one of the seven 2-8-4s leased from the P&LE, is getting underway out of the eastbound class yard with the 64 cars of A/NY-4 (commonly known as no. 96 - a pickup run to Bellefontaine). This train will be crossed over to the eastbound main at Eastwood tower after the hopper train clears. Of the seven ill-fated P&LE engines, the Big Four career of the 9405 was about average in length; she was put into service on September 14, 1955, was inactive from September 30th to November 1st due to a cut driver journal, and was laid up permanently on January 22, 1956, with badly perforated superheater units.
