Description
This is the view to the west from the steps of Eastwood tower, looking along the main line and into the east end of Brightwood Yard. A 53-car transfer cut, powered by no. 8899, a 1200-HP EMD switcher, is pulling up the eastward main past the home signal. The cut, enroute to Brightwood from Hill Yard, will be backed across the westward main and into the grass covered yard visible above, to the right of the 8899. This yard, known as "Eastwood", is the eastbound receiving yard at Brightwood. Cars are switched from its seven tracks into the eastbound class yard, which is further west and also adjacent to the main line. The engine in the center background (the 8902) is switching a cut into the westbound yard off what is known as the south lead, used by trains destined for points beyond Indianapolis. The north lead adjacent to it runs into the five-track “New” yard, which is used to yard trains that are to be broken up here. The 8902 is working a job called the "Brightwood westbound", which does classification work most of the time, and the 8899 is on the "City" job, which is engaged entirely in yard-to-yard transfer work.
