Title
Rear of train no. 3, depot and interlocking tower (on stilts) in view
Subject
Steam Passenger Train
Description
The turnout is for eastwards and the straight shot for westwards at the end of double track at Clarks Hill, hence in this scene the bobtail on the westbound 'Riley' was receding into the prairie at the maximum speed of 79 MPH. Hudson no. 5446 was on the business end of the eight-car streamliner. The tower, staffed by NYC operators on first and third tricks and NKP on second, is perched in the northwest corner of the NYC-NKP intersection, with the station across the diamond in the southeast corner. There is nothing but open country west of the tower the town lies east of the NKP and astride the NYC - and the position of the operators in windstorms is like that of forward observers in battle (the roof has been a casualty on at least one occasion).
