Description

Clarks Hill, 20 miles west of Lebanon and 16 miles east of Lafayette on the Indiana Division main line, is about as midwestern a village of 493 persons as can be found, on the NYC at least (the Peoria & Eastern has a few near-perfect prototypes on its line between Danville and Bloomington on the Illinois prairie, and there are undoubtedly more, but in any case the qualities and their sum total are immeasurable). Railroadwise, Clarks Hill is of more importance than its pinprick size would indicate. It has a tower at the intersection of the NYC and the St. Louis line of the Nickel - Plate, and it is at the end of double track out of Indianapolis on the NYC. The only train on the latter road which can be counted on to stop at Clarks Hill with any degree of regularity is the local freight, which runs between Indianapolis and Lafayette, westward on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and eastward on the following days. It is shown here on a Saturday morning, pulling onto the double track past the westward home signal at Clarks Hill behind H-5 no. 1394. It paused briefly to set out a load for the NKP, then hurried away, its crew aiming for an early off-duty at the home terminal.
