Title

Train no. CC-1

Subject

Steam Freight train

Description

With the caboose markers 69 cars back just about clear of Lebanon, the engineer on manifest no. 95 'widens on her' for the resumption of normal progress westward. 'Her' is L-2 no. 2877, and she was undoubtedly flexing her iron-horse sinews in anticipation of crowding the 50-MPH limit over the 32-mile stretch to Altamont, junction with the Nickel Plate just east of Lafayette. With a train of moderate tonnage and an easy profile ahead, conditions were favorable for some of the fast running for which L-2s were built and for which they had so little opportunity in their last years, when diesels had the hotshots and steam had the leavings.
