Steam Freight Train
Description
This picture was taken from Hartwell Avenue overpass just below Lockland, a suburb about three miles west of Sharon. (Lockland has sufficient industry to warrant the services of a yard engine, which is dispatched from Sharon six days a week in the afternoons.) The train in the foreground is the 1:00 PM transfer out of Sharon, bound for Ivorydale and Mill Creek. On its return trip, this job brings house and important connection cars from Mill Creek to Sharon for an 11:00 PM departure on Detroit/ON-2, the manifest run to Toledo and Detroit. On its westbound run, above, it had 40 cars and was powered by H-7 no. 1962. Mikados of the latter class were the workhorses of the Cincinnati Terminal in steam days. Twelve of them were usually based at Sharon, where they handled the six regular transfers, any extra transfers, and the light and heavy humps. About seven more remained at Riverside, the maintenance point, and these were used on a variety of Cincinnati Terminal and Indiana Division assignments. They normally covered the three regular transfers in the terminal and the turnaround local to Greensburg on the division. They were the standard power for terminal helper service, although H-5s and L engines. occasionally performed some of this work (which will be described in due time). In addition, they were often used as division helpers on Guilford Hill and, less frequently, as road power on Indianapolis runs. They were powerful drag engines, well-suited for the terminal assignments which they handled so ably.
