Description
The eleven cars of no. 433, an afternoon train from Cleveland to Cincinnati, follow the 5281 obediently through the naze of trackage just east of Springfield depot. Some of the objects referred to in the preceding commentary are in plainer focus here; the target signal (again set for movement to or from the Columbus line), and the Linden Avenue shanty are the most obvious of these. The train is headed for depot track one; the switch lamp at the lower right indicates the puzzle where depot two and three converge and then separate in the direction of Bellefontaine or Columbus. The single track line from Columbus is, of course, occupied by no. 426. The line from Bellefontaine, called the "Sandusky Division" after its northern terminus on Lake Erie, swings in from the left (it is double-tracked only from GM office, one mile east at the entrance to Springfield yard). The third leg of the wye runs close to the Oliver plant in the left background, and is used mostly by Columbus-Springfield freights on their way to and from the yard. A Detroit, Toledo and Ironton track parallels the Columbus line into town, in the middle background above, and curves along the Oliver plant on the right, ending in a small yard adjacent to the old coach yard of the NYC and connecting there with a Pennsylvania branch from Xenia. The DT&I interchanges with both the PRR and NYC here, but NYC deliveries to the DT&I are made at another yard near the DT&I crossing at East Street (the home signals at East Street are faintly visible in the distance along the Columbus line).
