Description
This is the east end of Rockport yard as seen from the Security Analysts’ special. There are a total of 37 tracks, bounded on the south by eastbound Belt main 4, which in the scene below supports the cut of cars on the extreme left, and on the north by westbound Belt main three, on which the special was traveling when the picture was made. Tracks are numbered from south to north. No's 1 through 4 are used to hold cars set out by eastbound road freights, and in fact the cars on Belt main 4 are part of an eastbound which is in the process of making a set out. The Baldwin road freight unit with its nose protruding from between the boxcars is attached to a puller on track 12. The two ladders in the foreground divide the yard on this end - track 21 is the outermost leading off the ladder on the left, and the scale track and no's. 22-31 in one pocket and 32-37 in another extend from the ladder closest to the camera. Tracks in the 32-37 pocket are used to hold pickups for outbound road freights, and a string of empty N&W hoppers can be seen on one of these (beyond the back of the nearest financial expert), waiting to be moved by one of the Columbus trains of the Big Four. More about the operations at Rockport in the succeeding footnote, particularly as they apply to the Big Four trains.
