Description
S-1 no. 6017 is shown above gathering speed just west of Short Line Junction with the 12 cars of no. 407, the afternoon train to Saint Louis. The eastbound home signals and the tower itself are visible less than a mile away. No. 407, of course, has always begun its run at Union Terminal, but the mail and express cars in its consist were formerly brought up from East 26th Street on a shuttle train via Front Street and Clark Avenue to Linndale, where they were cut in ahead of the coaches (the sane shuttle brought the cars for no. 433, the Cincinnati train, which follows no. 407 by a few minutes). Now the mail shuttles from East 26th Street run directly into C.U.T., and the necessary switching is performed there. In the area above, the Big Tour and Lakefront lines as they extend westward to a meeting at Berea form a "y", the upper part of which is crossed diagonally by the Belt between Short Line Junction and Belt Junction (on the Lakefront). Rockport yard, which will be the subject of the next two photographs, is sandwiched between the Big Tour and the Lakefront along this section of the Belt. In this picture, the view of Rockport is cut off by the forward portion of no. 407 and the white buildings in the left foreground.
