Description
The nine miles of former Big Four right of way between Clark Avenue on the east and Berea on the wet are much more important in the Cleveland Terminal scheme of things than the Front Street-Clark Avenue stretch, whose usefulness has just been discussed. All Line West and Big Four passenger trains running via Cleveland Union Terminal use the old Big Four between Berea and Clark Avenue, where connection is made with the C.U.T. line at an interlocking remotely controlled from CF tower at Linndale, about two and a half miles west (SM tower at Clark Avenue has consequently been abandoned). The tracks below are Big Four mains 1, 2 and 4 (left to right), with the camera facing east at Short Line Junction, a little over two miles west of CF. Since the picture was taken, track 4 has been removed, both east and west of the junction here. It was formerly used in both directions by road freights and pullers, and served to keep the latter out of the way of the passenger trains. Short Line Junction tower guards the crossing of the Big Four with the Belt (i.e., Cleveland Short Line), immediately east of the point where the latter runs past Rockport yard. This picture was made from the Security Analysts’ special as it crossed the Big Four, eastbound on Belt main 4. By means of the two wyes and a loop connection south of the Big Four, the operating at Short Line Junction can route westbounds from one line to the other in either direction, and can route eastbounds from either line east on the alternate line.
