Description
A short but stiff grade beginning just west of Jackson station and extending westward through a residential area of the city lifts the main line out of the valley of the Grand River. Steam-powered freight trains of any consequence got rear-end assistance up this hill from one of the Jackson yard engines. This train, with Mohawk 3100 on the point, was no exception. Behind its 100-car consist (16 loads and 84 empties for a total of 2727 tons), an eight-wheeled switcher is lending a hand. (See below)
