Description

This is the east end of Junction Yard, Detroit's major freight classification facility, as seen from the yardmaster's shanty at Livernois Avenue. The DetroitChicago main line is on the far right. Humper 8701 (with slug 453) is shoving towards the westbound hump from track l in the eleven-track Glory (westbound receiving) yard. In the foreground are the outbound and inbound engine tracks; between them and the Glory yard ladder are the middle and "hold-for-order" leads to the eastbound class yard. The former takes in tracks 1 thru 23 and the "Boulevard" (identified by the cars on the left nearest the camera), and the latter reaches tracks 24-36.
