Coal drag north out of PRR yard
Subject
Steam Freight Train
Description
Forty-five hundred Alco horses grumble out of the Pennsylvania's Southport Yard at Elmira with 79 cars, mostly coal loads, bound for De Witt Yard at Syracuse. Theirs is a circuitous route which takes them north through Horseheads, Watkins Glen, Dresden, Geneva, and eventually to a junction with the NYC main line at Jordan. Two NYC crews are assigned to this run, and the head brakeman of this one was about to climb into the cab, after having lined up a path to the main iron.
