Facilities

Description

Leota street divides the coal dock and storage area of the engine terminal at Shelby Street from the rest of the facilities - the water plugs, ash pits, machine shop, power house, turntable, and the roundhouse itself. Except where it is crossed by the main line, it is not protected, and the laborers at Shelby Street regularly engage in flagging activities, as illustrated here. On the south, north, and middle pit tracks, respectively, and from left to right, are engines 6015, 7816, and 1995. Three more dissimilar types do not often congregate for a picture - the 6015 a dual service machine of the most modern design, the 7816 a standard U.S.R.A. switcher born during World War I, and the 1995 a drag freight hog typical of the NYC and built in 1920. For Shelby Street roundhouse, built in 1898, the H-7 class 2-8-2 (of which the 1995 is a representative) is a fair-sized engine. Needless to say, the 6015 is by comparison a mammoth, and equally obvious is the conclusion that she is far too much locomotive for the facilities here. She will not fit on the turntable (nor will L-3s or L-45), and she cannot be put into the house (L-3s and L-4s can be quartered in one stall which lines up simultaneously with the turntable and the outbound lead). In truth, attempting to care for S-1 engines at Shelby Street is as reasonable as taking earth movers to a Good Humor Company garage.
