Diesel Freight Train

Description

The best window of IJ tower provides this view of the main line stretching out past BX towards Mount Jackson. Across the weed groin area is Westside-yard, and beyond it is the main line of the Pennsylvania (the string of boxcars in the left background, beyond Westside, is on a siding alongside the Pennsy mains). The westward home signals at BX are on top of the bracket post, and the tower is beyond and to the right of them (BX is half a mile west of IJ). The plants beyond the signal bridge, served by both NYC and PRR, are Adams and Link-Belt. The principal, function of IJ, which is to govern the junction of the St. Louis and Chicago lines where they converge in Indianapolis, is better illustrated in a following picture taken from the east window, The freight approaching above is headed for this junction; it is NY/BPNY-4, the NYC's fastest manifest out of st. Louis, running here with EMD units 1753-2436 and 46 cars. This is one of the hotshots from the west which, after setting off Indianapolis cars at Westside, is customarily operated "through town" (i.e., via the depot) rather than around the Belt. The Westside setoff is made between BX and Mount Jackson, and once this is accomplished, the six-and-a-half miles to Brightwood can normally be covered in 20-25 minutes, as against 45 minutes to an hour and a half for the nine-mile trip around the Belt.
