Description
This picture represents a departure from the steady westward progress thus far maintained in the sequence of pictures. Along with several others, it is included to illustrate the operation of NYC freight trains over the belt line of the Indianapolis Union Railway around the southern part of Indianapolis. The collection of 36 assorted empties, hoppers predominating, trailing the 2946 around the Belt here is identifiable as a Duane (Terre Haute) turn. It originated at Brightwood and will fill out with more empties at Westside before making the 70-mile run to Duane, on the return trip, these turns usually handle a trainload of coal off the Terre Haute-Evansville branch. The location above is just west of the Meridian Street-Bluff Road overpass and on the cast approach to the White River bridge. At this point, the Belt is four-tracked, with the middle tracks used for NYC and PRR freights and transfer movements of the IU, and the outside tracks (known as the east and west passers) for switching maneuvers and storage. The track entering the picture on the right is the connection from the IC, whose branch from Effingham follows the White River valley into Indianapolis. The Belt fill is underpassed by the IC just west of this point, and the IC's Wisconsin Street yard fans out north it of the fill.
