Description
This picture was taken immediately after the preceding one from the opposite (east) window of the tower at Belt Junction. It shows the head end of SLB-8 as the latter was crossed over, preparatory to being brought into the eastbound class yard at Brightwood. Most eastbound drag freights, especially the longer ones, are yarded at Eastwood, in the same manner as was the City cut (illustrated and described in two previous pictures). On this occasion, however, the train was short enough to be taken directly into the eastbound class yard. There was another factor involved which militated in favor of this procedure; the consist included, on the rear end, ten new subway cars for New York City, a high-priority shipment which lent manifest status to the train and meant that, instead of being switched, it was quickly filled out, inspected, and highballed. The eastbound class yard, consisting of ten tracks, is behind the home signal, and the westbound yard (twelve tracks) is adjacent and to the left of it. The cars at the extreme left are in the New yard. Brightwood yard is severely handicapped by the shortness of its tracks, the longest of which range in capacity from about 53 cars (in Eastwood and the eastbound class) to about 100 cars (in the New yard).
