E&I extra north
Subject
Steam Freight train
Description
In its passage through Terre Haute enroute to the junction point with the main line just west of the depot, the E&I traverses the highly-industrialized southwest side of town and, in so doing, establishes the NYC in the healthy position it enjoys vis-a-vis local traffic. After crossing the C&EI and Milwaukee at Spring Hill, five miles from the depot, the line runs northwest for three miles to Greenwood, where there is a small industrial yard in the shadow of a large grain elevator. It curves due north at Greenwood and enters upon First Street, remaining in the middle of the pavement for over a mile to the place where this photograph was made. The main line of the Pennsylvania is crossed at Vigo tower, about two pole lengths down the street. Several large industries, served from the E&I, are located along the west side of the street (on the right, below). The train is Extra 1957 north with 53 Gary coal. Its trip over E&I rails will be completed at the opposite end of the right-angle curve which begins in the foreground, but it will still have a little more than two miles of mainline trackage to traverse before its run is terminated at Duane yard, on the northeast side of town.
