Description
Terre Haute is about 70 miles west of Indianapolis on the main line of the Illinois Division. By virtue of its population of 65,000 and its importance in manufacturing and as the commercial center for a coal-mining region, it would be a key point on the railroad in any case. Added to the foregoing, though, is the status of Terre Haute as northern terminal of the Evansville branch, known as the 'E&I' since most of its trackage was annexed from the former Evansville and Indianapolis Railroad. Through its outlet at Terre Haute, this 130-mile branch contributes a steady and very considerable flow of coal traffic for east and westbound movement over the main line. E&I traffic is the reason for the 2,255-car Duane yard on the eastern edge of town, and, by the same token, it is responsible for nearly all of the road dispatchments and roughly two thirds of the yard dispatchments at the ten-stall Duane roundhouse. In the scene above, H-7 2-8-2 no. 1962, shortly after her departure from Duane, trails a 62-car empty train through the depot at Terre Haute, enroute south on the E&I.
