Description
With her engineer hunched forward and outward in traditional fashion, the 5437 blasts out of Shelbyville at the head of no. 416, enroute from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. The pavement is none other than Main Street, and the building is Vine tower. The operator at Vine controls the crossing here of the Columbus-Dublin Junction branch of the Pennsylvania, a local-freight-except-Sunday proposition. More important, however, is his control over the remote siding at Fairland, 6.5 miles west, and over the five-plus miles of double track from here to the remote interlocking at Clifty, to the east. The westward main between Vine and Clifty is signalled in both directions and is used accordingly, but the eastward main, signalled in one direction only, is used principally as a long eastward siding.
