Valley Run, crossing guard in view
Subject
Steam Freight Train
Description
In the same location, but moving in the opposite direction, the eastbound Advance Valley Run is shown here pulling through downtown Springfield on its way to the yard, one mile east. The power is another L-3, no. 3058, and there are 42 cars. Once again, Limestone Street is in the foreground. The switches and signals in the background at the junction of the depot tracks with the mains are controlled by a switch tender at Fountain Avenue, which crosses just beyond the signal bridge. On its eastbound run, the train above handles cars out of Cincinnati for Franklin, Hutchings Station, Dayton Power and Light Company, Dayton proper, and the cement plants at Fairborn. Cars picked up at - Moraine and Dayton make up the consist into Springfield. From West End (a remote interlocking at the beginning of double track) to its present location, this train has traversed two miles of main line infested with street crossings, and it has even occupied the middle of Washington Street for three blocks, quitting the pavement at Fountain Avenue above. Most freight trains bypass Springfield via the Erie Railroad between Glen Echo on the east and Cold Springs on the west - a distance of nine miles. The crews of the few which do not are well advised to keep moving on the aforementioned section, or risk arrest for tying up the west side of town.
