Title

Extra west, third section of NY-6

Subject

Steam Freight Train

Description

Engine 1982 walks a 69-car third section of NY-6 (a "symboled extra") upgrade out of Brightwood yard, eastbound on the 25-mile tangent, which extends from Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis to Pendleton. Mikados of the H-7 class such as the one above were rarely used on the Ohio Division; their merits as drag freight power were more appreciated on the Terre Haute-Evansville branch and in the Cincinnati Terminal, where they were regularly assigned. During power shortages, however, engines were liable to turn up almost anyplace; H-7s would arrive in Indianapolis off drags from Cincinnati, and if circumstances dictated, they would be used to cover runs to Bellefontaine (since they were not equipped with Automatic Train Stop, they could not be used west on the Illinois Division). Generally speaking, the relatively flat territory between Indianapolis and Bellefontaine was better suited for the speedier 4-2-2s.
